TCM - How to manage stress and related symptoms naturally.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners distinguish 3 different diagnosis related to the western diagnose Stress. All of them are relates to disharmony of “Qi” or life energy in some meridians/organ. When there is a deficiency, excess or stagnation, a disease is occurred. TCM practitioners treat not only physical but psychological or mental aspect of the disease.

Stress Type #1 – Kidney Qi deficiency.

When the Kidney Chi deficiency occurs, a person feels tired all the time, He can have dark circles under the eyes, low libido, and hormonal disbalances. Uro-genital infections are common for the person with this type of stress. Psychologically he feels anxious, freighted, powerless and nervous.

To resolve the problem we have to support the Qi energy by proper sleeping, breathing and food.

Sleep: many people already forget what a proper sleep is. Our days everything is going very fast with modern technology and we have to fit this rhythm of life. Accordingly, we compensate the luck of time by sleeping less.

For this type of stress it is good to go some quiet place and sleep as long as you can. But just a few people can do it. So the best thing to do is to sleep as long as you can during the weekend. It is good to turn off all the gadgets as tablets, phones, computers, as this keep us awake by interfering with our biorhythms.

Food: Qi of Kidney nourish by seafood as mussels, oysters and fish. Black sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, cashew and pork meat are very good addition to support the Kidney Qi as well.

Meditation is one more tool to help people with Kidney Qi Deficency.

Acupuncture: Points are mainly selected from Kidney Meridian, Bladder Meridian and Conception Meridian and treated with reinforcing method.

Stress Type #2 - Digestive system disharmony.

While digestive system Qi is compromised, the person can experience very unpleasant symptoms such as stomach pain, gas, heartburn, diarrhea or constipation. For instance, the body don’t have enough nourishment and as the result the person can feel week, pale, dizzy.

Psychologically, the person tent to feel offended or aggressed too often, may be aggressive himself with no reason, tearfulness.

Food: Having digestion problem, people are trying to switch to healthy food such as salads and fruits and avoid fast food. Even so, it is usually not enough to save the situation. As the digestion system is damaged already, it cannot transform raw food to energy and Qi. Chinese doctors recommend eating only cooked vegetables, fruit and grains for 6-8 month. Soups should be prepared on the base of long cooked stock. After this diet the person should return to the normal food steadily.

The food for supporting the digestive system is goji berry and sesame seeds. Also, one can add some spices such as fennel seeds, gloves, ginger, coriander and caraway seeds “to light up the digestive fire”

Verbalization: When the person cannot “digest” a situation, Chinese doctors recommend discussing and trying to express the emotions and feeling. For some people keeping a diary or having some acting classes could be a good help.

Acupuncture: Points are selected from the Spleen, the Kidney and the Stomach Meridian combined with Back-Shu and Front-Mu points of the Spleen. The points are treated with reinforcing method.

Stress type # 3 Liver Qi stagnation.

When Liver Qi is depleted is can affect the work of other organs and create the whole bunch of different issues.

Physically the person can have poor sleep, difficulties to fall asleep, wake up during the night or digestive issues. On the psychological level it can be the situation then the person feels powerless in front of problems or issues to resolve.

Food: Supporting fat metabolism is the main function of the healing food. To help the liver to rest and restore its function, we should exclude fat meat from the diet and change it for vegetable oil, fish oil and sea fish. Traditional Chinese medicine recommends tuna, salmon, anchovy, and mackerel. Omega 3 is a good supplement to support liver Qi as well. Spices such as Rosemary, Mint, Anise and Marjoram are the good additions to support liver.

Planing: A person with a healthy Liver knows very well that he wants now and what he wants in the future. When the Liver Channel is blocked, it is hard to see the perspective. Planning is the best way to resolve this problem. We can see even clearly and relieving the part of stress by separating the things to do to 2 sections: list minimum and list maximum.

Exercise: TCM recommends treating this type of stress with physical activity. During the exercise the body release the endorphin, hormone of happiness and the person feels more empower in front of the problem.

Acupuncture: Points if the Liver Meridian are mainly selected and treated with reducing methods.

To conclude, I would recommend listening to your body, as all psychological difficulties are leads to physical problems and vice versa.
